Connecting the Town Library and High School

By Quinn Kritzky

Do you know the unofficial path between the library and the high school lower field that is often used as a cut-off for walking from one location to the other? Many people use that path for sports practices and town events like Summer Fest. The path was created simply by years of use by the public, but was never officially maintained as a pedestrian walkway. Unknown people over the years have used pallets or plywood to bridge over the stream portion of this path, which is not a very good solution. When I was considering what I thought would be a good project to improve my community, I thought that I’d like to see that path be improved with a more permanent solution.

Having been a part of Girl Scouts since I was five, I was looking forward to the day when I could do my Silver Award Project. To achieve my Silver Award, I needed to research issues in my community and find something that I felt strongly about and that could make a difference for many people in our town. Improving this pathway is the project I chose to do.  I started the planning process almost two years ago when I was in seventh grade, and now I’ll be starting my freshman year and hope to see my project soon completed.

Some of the people who have helped me along the way, and will continue to help me as resources, are my parents, my Girl Scout Troop Leader, another Girl Scout in my troop, the Stafford Rotary and SHS Interact Club, the First Selectman, the Town Building Department, the Town Zoning Enforcement Officer, the Inland & Wetlands Commission, the Stafford Public Schools Director of Facilities, and Stafford Public Works. After many meetings, discussions and approvals, the final design will be a decked walkway and bridge constructed on a base of stone over the tree roots and stream. I look forward to the completion of my project so that it can be used by the Stafford community.
