SHS Drama Ready to Debut "The Addams Family"

By Gabrielle H. and Gracie P.

The Addams Family is a musical comedy on the beloved family of the same name - who first saw the light of day in Charles Addams’ 1938 cartoon in The New Yorker. Since then, the kooky family has been the subject of numerous shows and movies - most notably The Addams Family television series in the 1960s and the current spinoff Wednesday.

At the core of our story is Wednesday Addams, who confides in her father, Gomez, about her love for a “normal” boy, Lucas Beineke, and makes him promise not to tell Morticia. As the Addams prepare to host a dinner for Lucas’ parents, Mal and Alice Beineke, Wednesday’s demand of “normal” behavior leads to chaos, orchestrated in part by the mischievous Uncle Fester and jealous actions of Wednesday’s younger brother, Pugsley.

During the dinner, Morticia discovers Wednesday’s engagement and Gomez’s secret, sparking a marital rift. Alice, under the influence of a truth-telling potion, reveals her own marital frustrations. Throughout the narrative, the Addams’ ghostly ancestors, summoned from their crypt, provide a spectral chorus, observing and influencing the unfolding events. They push to make everyone fall in love, back In place to get back to the crypt where they long to Rest In Pease.

The Addams and Beinekes are forced to confront their stark differences, discovering the value of love, acceptance, and the enduring power of family. The show expresses that love and acceptance can bridge even the most unusual of divides.

We interviewed our cast on their experience in our production of The Addams Family

Gomez (Devin A.) and Morticia (Lilly B.)

1. What’s been your most memorable moment in this production so far?

  • Devin A - Choreo, its been very interesting and intense it’s definitely been the most memorable part of the Addams production

  • Lilly B - the most memorable part for me has been Choreo. It’s been so fun to learn and experience

2. Can you share a funny or unexpected moment that happened backstage?

  • Devin A - I would say running the tango, its very fun

  • Lilly B - The funniest part for me so far has been teaching Colin (lucas) how to shimmy, it was the highlight of that rehearsal

3.  Who in the cast or crew is most likely to break character? Any stories?

  • Devin A- Jadyn (Wednesday) 100%, she doesn’t share the same personality as wednesday because she is always so happy where wednesday isn’t

  • Lilly B- Honestly I would say devin, because he is goofy on and off stage

4. How did you connect with your character? Did you draw from any personal experiences?

  • Devin A- For Gomez I drew from my family, specifically my moms side of the family.

  • Lilly B- My personality is the exact opposite of Mortcia  do to step into her I usually just do the exact opposite of what I would normally do

5. What’s been the hardest emotion to portray in this production?

  • Devin A- Gomez is usually a very fun and happy character so having to tap into his anger or seriousness is very hard to do.

  • Lilly B- Morticia seems to not care but she does so trying to do that can be difficult but also having a husband like Gomez it is very hard to not laugh on stage

7. If your character had a secret backstory that wasn’t in the script, what would it be?

  • Devin A and Lilly B -  The backstory is that Lurch is Wednesday's dad because she is taller than Gomez and doesn't share his personality and Uncle Fester is Pugsley's dad because they are both weird and quirky in very similar ways.

Wednesday (Jadyn K.)

 1. What’s been your most memorable moment in this production so far?

  • The most memorable thing so far was our first dress rehearsal and seeing everyone excited

2. Can you share a funny or unexpected moment that happened backstage?

  • Something funny that has happened is during Happy Sad the person who plays Gomez and I laughed so hard we bashed our heads together which made us laugh even more

3.  Who in the cast or crew is most likely to break character? Any stories?

  •  I think I am most likely to break character, because I smile a lot when I am suppose to be straight face. I also laugh at everything so it’s hard keeping a straight face.

4. How did you connect with your character? Did you draw from any personal experiences?

  • I  connected with Wednesday because she feels very conflicted on how to feel and she gets angry quite fast and to feel the anger she feels I think of times that someone made me feels the way that she feels.

5. What’s been the hardest emotion to portray in this production?

  • I think the hardest emotion to portray is the numbness and darkness that Wednesday has, I am a very happy and positive person so it is quite hard to feel the way she feels.

 6. Do you have any pre-show rituals or superstitions?

  • Yes absolutely, behind the curtain I do Sharpay’s warmups that she does before her auditions and it helps my nerves and keeps me calm :)

7. If your character had a secret backstory that wasn’t in the script, what would it be?

  • I think if Wednesday had a secret back story it would be that she has something that she keeps something in her room that bring her happiness whether it be a puppy or flowers. Something that she hides from her parents but makes her feel something other than misery
